I was first introduced to CSI and their management/performance review methodologies while working in a manufacturing plant that was not performing on many fronts. The CSI team taught us the importance of defining our “winning and losing” metrics and the criticality of ensuring that EVERYONE in the organization, from the shop floor to the site leadership team, were kept informed of our winning or losing status.

The team stressed the art and importance of Gemba - going to where the work happens, asking questions, and coaching - and the importance of a bidirectional escalation process. They taught us discipline (standing meetings where you stand for the entire meeting!!!) and the critical “team contract.” There is something about seeing in print the agreements you make, the behaviors you will abide by, the governance process you will use - and then signing your name to it. That codifies the leadership team’s ways of working, driving team dynamics and performance to a new level.

As I have progressed through my career, each role being more senior in nature, I have shared these methodologies with my leadership teams to ensure we ground ourselves as a team.  It takes work and continuous assessment of performance to transform good teams into great teams.  And I can honestly say as I look back, the team I was leading when I first learned these methodologies turned out to be one of the best performing I have ever experienced.  Hard work pays off!
